Claim: 🚨 A QUESTION NOBODY IS ASKING ABOUT THE “NEW PROVINCES” PLAN If Pakistan is going to be divided into new provinces/administrative units, then what happens to the CANTONMENTS? And perhaps an even bigger question: Why should some of the most valuable land in Pakistan’s biggest cities remain outside normal civilian municipal control? Take Rawalpindi. Rawalpindi Cantt = 41.16 km² Chaklala Cantt = 34.01 km² Combined = 75.17 km² An Urban Unit study has described the Cantonment Boards as administering approximately HALF OF RAWALPINDI CITY. According to the 2023 census, around 1.07 MILLION people live in Rawalpindi + Chaklala cantonments — almost 32% of the population when compared with the Metropolitan Corporation plus the two cantonments. Lahore also contains enormous and extremely valuable cantonment holdings. The 2023 census records more than 1.25 million people in Lahore and Walton cantonments combined. Karachi has SIX cantonments: Karachi, Clifton, Faisal, Malir, Korangi Creek and Manora. So here is the debate Pakistan should have: Why shouldn't surplus/non-operational cantonment land in prime commercial locations be returned to civilian urban planning? Why shouldn't commercially developable state land be transparently auctioned, with the proceeds used to: ➡️ Reduce Pakistan's domestic debt ➡️ Finance infrastructure ➡️ Improve water, transport and sanitation ➡️ Benefit the taxpayers whose cities surround these lands Obviously, operational military installations, strategic facilities and genuine defence requirements must remain protected. But golf courses, commercial plazas, housing schemes and other non-operational prime urban land deserve a completely different conversation. If Pakistan is serious about creating new provinces and administrative units, cantonment governance cannot be treated as a sacred cow. Pakistan's prime state land is ultimately a national asset. The Pakistani people deserve to know its value, who benefits from it, and where its revenue goes. Should Pakistan conduct a complete public audit of cantonment land and auction surplus commercial land to help pay down the national debt?
